Here's a great idea: Let's take the baby and go to a restaurant! This came up during week 2 in our house when one of Andrea's colleagues called and wanted to meet the "little guy" while also eating lunch with Andrea in a PUBLIC PLACE. My immediate reaction was: "that's a great idea, honey; you guys go and do that; sounds like fun." Then Andrea told me I had to go too. My enthusiasm turned into terror. Why on earth would we even consider this? Just the other day it was 2:00 PM before Andrea managed to put on a shirt and after 3 when she finished eating breakfast. We can barely manage manage a trip to the mail box and unless the trip is ordered by a medical professional I would never even consider committing to actually delivering the baby to a certain place at a certain time. This baby is not yet suitable for public places! But Andrea was fearless. I gathered my courage. We've gone out before. There have been 2 trips back to the birthing center, one to the pediatrician and even one very brief stop at whole foods. So far things had gone pretty well but I assumed we had just been lucky. So far he had just fallen asleep right after we put him into his car seat and been mostly subdued the whole time. But this would be different. There would be regular, non child-toting people there. We might even have to change his diaper!
Andrea did her best to induce a milk coma about an hour ahead and off we went. He did OK. We sat at a booth at Kerbey Lane Cafe, which is thankfully 1/2 mile from our house. We left Collin in his car seat, propped his seat between the table and the bench and we ordered food! The waitress did ask if he needed anything and I resisted the urge to tell her he wanted a pizza. But the food came and we ate it! No screaming, no diaper explosions, no one was staring at us. It was weird. We even lingered outside the restaurant and talked for a bit. I definitely vote that we quit while we are ahead and never ever try that again!
